Valley thicket
A unique biome – the Valley thicket occurs in hot dry
valleys. It extends outwards from our local river valleys
and can invade neighbouring eco systems of fynbos,
savanna and grassland. It is dense and often
impenetrable but rarely exceeds 6m in height.
It is home to birds like:
•
Knysna Turaco
•
Black Sparrowhawk
•
Grey Sunbird
•
Brown-hooded Kingfisher
•
Knysna and Olive Woodpeckers and many more
Typical thicket
It is dominated by aloes, euphorbias, cycads and a variety
of succulents like crassula and spekboom. It supports
more animal life per cubic metre than any other
vegetation worldwide.
Red-fronted Tinkerbird
These minute birds keep up an incessant, monotonous
call on one pitch. An incredible 335 unbroken notes have
been recorded.
Crowned Hornbill
A striking feature is the red bill and casque, adeptly used
to hawk insects in the air. They also forage for fruit.
Some other typical species found in this special habitat
are the Brown-hooded Kingfisher,
Klaas's Cuckoo, Grey-headed Bush-Shrike and African
Green Pigeon.
